Duke, a majestic Great Dane, was born with a spinal defect—a deformed vertebra that is inoperable. This condition affects his mobility, causing him to stumble, trip, and occasionally fall. While it may resemble Wobbler syndrome, a common condition in Danes, it is not the same. Duke’s feet often scrape the ground as he drags them, unable to fully lift or control them. To protect his paws from constant scuffing, bleeding, and the need for wound care, they are wrapped as much as possible.

Despite these challenges, Duke is a big, goofy, and loveable oversized puppy who doesn’t let his condition slow him down. He still chases other dogs at top speed, galloping around the yard with his enormous paws. Even when he slips and slides, Duke quickly pops back up and resumes his joyful zoomies. His endearing and slightly clumsy gait has earned him the nickname “Dukezilla,” as he stomps around like a friendly giant causing playful chaos wherever he goes.

Recently, Duke was evaluated by the neurology and rehabilitation departments at the University of Illinois Veterinary Hospital. They’ve provided promising ideas and treatments to help improve his condition. Now, it’s just a matter of getting these treatments started and seeing where this journey takes him.
